Good News - June 2025

Graduation year is like a forgotten dream, but the song that makes me think of high school is the worship song, “God of Wonders.” Justus Martin, Photographer, Justus Martin Photo “Lady in Red” was a fitting song the year of my high school graduation, as we marched down the aisle in our bright red commencement gowns! Laura C. Bishop, Executive Vice President of Development, Palm Beach Atlantic University “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees instantly takes me back to my high school graduation in 1979. That song was everywhere — blasting at parties, on the radio, even at our prom. Every time I hear it, I’m back on the dance floor in my bell bottoms, feeling like the world was wide open. Dr. Mary Drabik, President, South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary It was a challenge remembering what year I graduated high school (1967) since it was back in the stone ages or should I say the "Stones" ages? Though it was a period of cultural turmoil with the emphasis on sex, drugs and rock and roll, my tastes back then ran to Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" or the Turtles singing "Happy Together" with an uplifting performance by the 5th Dimension of "Up, Up and Away." Just a little bit of innocence before the turbulent 70's. Mike McDermott, Seniors and Probate Specialist, The Keyes Company Hands down, Phil Collins, “In The Air Tonight.” I still listen to it till this day. Dr. Mike Rozenblum, Genesis Physical Medicine and Chiropractic There is a song by Crosby, Stills & Nash that was popular my senior year called "Southern Cross." No idea why, but it always reminds me of our senior class bonfire the week of our graduation. Milan Stefanovic, Chief Operations & Personal Lines Officer, Bass Underwriters “Gonna Fly Now” by Bill Conti is the song that immediately takes me back to graduation. I adopted it as my personal anthem as I left behind high school and all I knew to “fly” into this big, incredibly exciting - and terrifying - world that the Boston Conservatory of Music and the city of Boston represented. It was, is, and always will be the song that stirs my soul every time I hear it. Oksana Horton, Creative Director, Torch and Trumpet Theatre Company The song “To Sir, With Love” takes me back to my high school graduation year, which was the year of 1967. “To Sir, With Love” is the theme song in the 1967 film “To Sir, With Love.” The song was performed by Scottish singer and actress Lulu, who also starred in the film with one of my favorite actors, Sydney Poitier. The film was primarily about combatting social and racial issues in a rough London East End school populated mostly with troublemakers who were rejected from other schools for their behavior. Sydney Poitier, the teacher, who had a calm demeanor, was able to win their respect because they saw that he really wanted them to succeed in life. Many from my graduating class went to see the movie and were inspired by the movie to do our best to succeed in life. O’Neal Dozier, Pastor, The Worldwide Christian Center “The Morning After” sung by Maureen McGovern takes me back to my senior year. I went to see “The Poseidon Adventure” in my senior year and heard it on the radio often. The song makes me think of the movie and my senior year at the same time. It had a long list of famous people and was very intense for that time. Patricia Colangelo, EdS, South Florida Bible College & Theological Seminary The song that instantly takes me back to my High School Graduation is the theme song from “Happy Days.” The TV sitcom was depicted in the 1950’s but it was the #1 TV show in America in 1976 when I graduated high school. To help refresh your memories: “Monday, Tuesday - HAPPY DAYS… Thursday, Friday - HAPPY DAYS…” Little did I know then that the “BEST HAPPY DAYS” were yet to come! Coach Rick Andreassen, Founder and President, SAINTS Homeschool P.E. and SAINTS International Sports Ministry Since I graduated High School in 1971, I have got to go with “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night! Starts off with… Jeremiah was a bull frog, was a good friend of mine… Upbeat, joyful vibe celebrating happiness, freedom and the simple joys of life. Great song for an 18-year-old leaving home and venturing out in the world. Romney C. Rogers, Managing Partner, Rogers, Morris & Ziegler LLP I graduated high school during a period of cultural austerity, musically speaking. The era’s defining tracks included Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” — a song mistaken for profundity largely due to acoustic guitar — and “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba, whose name alone ensured no one would take them or their music seriously. Dr. Scott Manor, President, Professor of Historical Theology, Knox Theological Seminary The song that instantly takes me back to my graduation year is “This Is the Time” by Billy Joel. This was the song for our year, and it is a great reminder just as Psalm 90 reminds us to make the most out of the time that we have because everything changes, and we only have the moment that we are in once. As my nephew graduates this year and one of my children moves to middle school, I have to constantly remind myself that we should live each moment as if it were our last and this is the time to remember.
