The most generous gift I ever received was when, at the age of 14, I was offered a full scholarship to the Fairmont Center for Creative and Performing Arts by Jan Kuman, the director of the school. I could barely believe my ears when she offered it. As a child of Ukrainian immigrants who both worked multiple jobs to keep us fed and clothed, the idea of going to a school like the Fairmont Center was sheer fantasy. And yet, through her generosity, I trained under the auspices of some of New York’s finest dance and theater teachers.
