Good News - October 2020

What does the Bible say about Freedom? Don't know about you, but I live a cliche riddled life. I almost start my think- ing process by pondering cliches and then drill down from there, like a word association of sorts. I think about everything: names, nicknames, building names, city names, slogans... My mind rarely has a neutral gear; I'm in drive or reverse. I try not to allow indecision to paralyze me, so I generally move forward with a positive take on what the options may be? In the great experiment called doing life we meet people, situations, ex- periences of all types and shapes. I think about the I can't when people dismiss or are dismissive. I under- stand that; I just don't get it. Then I ponder why not ? Why not is a good option, an excellent option. Experience suggests past performance if good, feeds optimism and bad experience stops you cold. But, was that bad experience ill-conceived and not geared to work? What WAS that last experience? That returns me to I can't . I can't is a choice, not a failure unless you really mean I won't ? And that leads me to Freedom . The Beatles sang about "The Long and Winding Road." "Many times I've been alone, and many times I've cried. Anyway, you'll never know the many times I've tried." Freedom is at the forefront of society and freedom is at the crossroads right now. If you were born here in America, freedom is something we gave little thought to in the past. If you wanted to go and do, travel, indulge, purchase, nourish, couple, view, whatever, if you had some bucks, then freedom was a given – here in America. Freedom in America has been fractured, pulverized and smushed. We no longer have freedom of movement like in the good old days of 2019. Masks, distancing and sanitizer = good. Handshakes, hugs and travel = bad. First it was temporary to flatten a curve, and now we are told our freedoms are subject to local laws, and if I'm the Mayor or Governor, you do what I say and when and how I say it. When did all this happen? We watched it happen. Like a sporting event when something unusual or wonderful or disastrous happens, we immediately look for the film to watch it again and again. Generally accepted instant replay , we watch it over and over from every conceivable angle and in slow motion... Freedom is Blowin’ in the Wind The sinner and heathen that I am, I take many cues frommusic. Feldman - In 1962 Bob Dylan wrote “Blowin' in the Wind.” "How many roads must a man walk down Before you call him a man? How many seas must a white dove sail Before she sleeps in the sand? Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly Before they're forever banned? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind The answer is blowin' in the wind. Yes, 'n' how many years can a mountain exist Before it is washed to the sea? Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist Before they're allowed to be free? Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head And pretend that he just doesn't see? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind The answer is blowin' in the wind Yes, 'n' how many times must a man look up Before he can see the sky? Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have Before he can hear people cry? Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take 'til he knows That too many people have died? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind The answer is blowin' in the wind .” So let's check THE book. “Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves” (1 Peter 2:16 NIV). “Liberty as a cloak for vice. Believers should enjoy their freedom in Christ, but ought not to put on a veil or mask of freedom to cover what is wickedness. Christians’ freedom is never to be an excuse for self-indulgence or license.” - Les CONTENTS Publisher: Leslie J.
