Habitat for Humanity of Broward recently dedicated nine homes in Pompano Beach dur- ing the COVID-19 crisis, provid- ing safe, decent new homes to low-income families in need of affordable housing. City of Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin congratu- lated the families and thanked the sponsors. “This is the result of so much hard work and heart,” said Nancy Robin, Habitat Broward CEO and Executive Director. “I’m immensely proud of each and every one of our families for making today happen, and I’m so very thankful for our spon- sors, volunteers, construction team and other employees.” When COVID-19 forced Habitat for Humanity of Broward to close its ReStore and cancel volunteers, Robin and her staff decided to hire subcontractors for plumbing, electric and car- pentry, and invite homeowners, ReStore and other staff to per- form work that did not require special skills like painting and landscaping. “The journey to home own- ership isn't easy,” expressed Jonathan DeLuca of the Freder- ick A. DeLuca Foundation, which sponsored multiple family homes. “But these families un- derstand the long term impact of owning a safe, stable and afford- able home.” Through Habitat, hardwork- ing families are able to obtain a modest home with a mortgage kept to 30 percent of household income. They give 300 hours of sweat equity to build their homes and the homes of neighbors, at- tend a year of classes andmake a small down payment. For info, visit habitatbroward.org.
