Good News - March 2019

Bias Versus Hatred I always try to be positive. That's a personal preference as well as a Good News mantra. We are living in a fast-paced, changing world, and some rules seem to get blurred; however, the constant that remains is the Christ-like ex- ample of serving, teaching, encouragement, generosity and mercy. We can and should strive for some degree of commitment to live by these principals, knowing we all have gifts and personal areas of strength, so obeying the Lord’s will should comfort us in knowing we too can be obedient and righteous in our walk as we do life. I am reminded that people may have a tendency to say "that is the best restaurant" or "that was the worst meal, movie or show I have ever.. ." We generalize even though we speak emphatically to a fault. We all have bias. I may like pistachio ice cream more than chocolate; that is bias, but some people may loosely say, "Oh, I hate vanilla but love chocolate." That is more than bias; that is declarative. We are haunted by the bombardment in the blurring of bias versus hatred , and that casual misun- derstanding of context is hurtful and dangerous. When we wear a hat (red) or a sports team jersey, decorative tattoos, cross or Star of David, we should never be referred to in racist terms. Yes, we can be biased in support for our home team or faith but not hateful of other symbols because by definition that is racism, and there is no blurred line in that context. We are all special with special talents, so our wonderful diversity should be celebrated. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to en- courage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully” (Romans 12:6&7 NIV).
