OUT AND ABOUT 30 MARCH 2019 Good News • South Florida Edition Westminster Academy Senior Breaks Boys National 3-Point Record Westminster Students Travel to 34th Annual Harvard Model Congress Chase Johnston added to the excitement of the Westmin- ster Academy Winter Court game on February 1, by setting a new national high school boys’ record for all-time career 3-pointers made according to MaxPreps. A senior at West- minster Academy, Johnston broke the previous national record of 520 on his second shot during the game against John Carroll Catholic High School ending with a total of 523. The Westminster Acad- emy Lions defeated John Car- rol 78–50, and Johnston led the victory with 24 points. “Chase Johnston proved again why he is arguably the best shooter in the country,” said Ehren Wallhoff, Varsity Basketball Coach for Westmin- ster Academy. Johnston is performing well on the national stage. He also walked away from the Montverde Academy Invita- tional Tournament on January 26 holding a new record. At the national event, he scored 52 points in a single game, break- ing the one previously held by Ben Simmons. Johnston had a total of 93 points in the three- game tournament. Johnston has played all four years at Westminster Academy on the men’s varsity basketball team, who are two- time defending Class 4Acham- pions. He has committed to Purdue University Fort Wayne upon graduation. Twenty-three students from Westminster Academy traveled to Boston, Massachu- setts, for the 34th Annual Har- vard Model Congress. Harvard Model Congress (HMC) is a program hosted by Harvard in which high school students from across the coun- try have a chance to spend four days as members of the United States “government.” Students are assigned committees and deal with real political issues going on today. In their committees, stu- dents from schools across the nation debate, write, and pass bills. Students from Westmin- ster Academy delegation also participated in the Presidential Cabinet, National Economic Council, National Security Council, Supreme Court, and the historical Constitutional Convention Committee. At the end of the confer- ence, three students from Westminster Academy were recognized for their hard work. Clara Harms and Jennea Katic received honorable mentions, and Sierra Sollars received a best in committee award, the highest award given for com- mittee work.
