PUBLISHER 4 AUGUST 2019 www.goodnewsfl.org Good News • South Florida Edition Good News family, This month in lieu of my monthly Publishers column I wanted to recognize the profound and significant collective pride America experienced celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and who better than Franklin Gra- ham to reminisce the spiritual significance of the first words spoken upon landing on the moon, enjoy! - Les Feldman God’s reach or His presence — even the moon! Did you know that some of the first words spoken on the moon were the words of Jesus? Today [July 20, 2019] marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing! This is still an accomplishment that amazes us. And did you know communion was held on the moon after that first landing? After they touched down, Astronaut Buzz Aldrin led the nation in giving thanks as he radioed back to earth, “I’d like to take the opportunity to ask every person listening in, whoever and wherever they may be, to pause for a moment and con- template the events of the past few hours and to give thanks…” Then he turned off the radio, had communion, and read aloud from the Word of God: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing" ( John 15:5 ) Aldrin said he had planned to read the Scripture passage on the radio back to earth, but at the last minute NASArequested he not do it. They were in a legal battle withMada- lyn Murray O’Hair over theApollo 8 crew reading from Genesis while orbiting the moon at Christmas! Even in 1969, the forces of secularism were trying to trample on religious freedom. Aldrin documented the importance of it in Guideposts magazine saying, “The very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the very first food eaten there, were the com- munion elements.” It is very comforting to know that there is literally nowhere that is so far away that it is beyond God’s reach or His presence—even the moon!
