Mazda NorthAmerican Op- erations (MNAO) established the Mazda Drive for Good char- itable program as a way to give back to the communities in which it does business. For the second year in a row, Place of Hope benefited from this pro- gram. Mazda Drive for Good col- laborated with four national and 42 community non-profit organi- zations across the country. Place of Hope was chosen as the local non-profit organization in the southeast Florida area. Through Mazda Drive for Good, Place of Hope received $25,000 for two consecutive years. Local dealer- ships who supported the Drive for Good campaignwere, Grieco Mazda of Delray Beach, Mazda of Palm Beach and Southern Palms Mazda. Customers who visited these locations were given the option to give towards Place of Hope or one of the four national charities. Customer di- rected donations raised $8,000. “Mazda stepped up in a big way, committing two years to Place of Hope. On behalf of the 350 children, youth and families in care at Place of Hope each day, we are truly thankful for the commitment and generosity of the entire Mazda organization,” said Charles L. Bender III, Founding CEO Place of Hope Mazda Supports Place of Hope for Second Year Sebastian Anschutz, Jamie Bond, Cliff Dittmore Since 1936, American As- sociation of University Women (AAUW) Palm Beach County (PBC) Branch has worked to advance the education of women and girls. In 2013, those efforts expanded to provide middle school-aged girls with the opportunity to become, “im- mersed in a world that empow- ers and encourages them to think about themselves as fu- ture scientists, engineers, mathemati- cians, and computer special- ists,” through AAUW Florida’s Tech Trek program. Courses were held on the Palm Beach State College Boca Raton cam- pus while campers and staff ex- perienced dorm life on the campus of nearby Florida At- lantic University. This year AAUW Palm Beach County sponsored eight girls: Isabella Berkoff, Precious Clark, BellaMartinez,Ami Piper, Shamiha Tonima, McKenna Wickers, GraysenWilliams, and Sofia Wiskoff. They joined 56 other girls across Florida who also traveled to Boca Raton. Core workshops such as App Inventor, Robotics, Marine Biology, and Engineering in- cluded topics on DNA, Cyber- security, Chemistry, Art & Math, Weather, Rockets, Problem Solving, and Personal Finance. While days were filled with En- gineering and Robotics classes, complete with bridge and robot construction, the girls attended Professional Women’s Night, sponsored by AT&T, where campers me eighteen women representing careers in Sci- ence, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Visit palmbeach-fl.aauw.net TECH TREK 2018 Encourages Young Women in STEM Hoffman’s Chocolates held its Ice CreamSundae Competi- tion – Making Sweet Creations for Sweet Donations at Hoff- man’s Chocolates/ BBX Capi- tal’s corporate office on Thursday,August 2. Seven non- profit organizations each part- nered with a Hoffman’s store manager to create a special ice cream sundae for the competi- tion. A panel of five local judges determined that the Friends of Birch State Park’s 'AWalk in the Park' sundae, partnered with the Las Olas Hoffman’s Choco- lates, was the winning combina- tion. Taking home first-place, Friends of Birch State Park re- ceived a donation of $1,500 from Hoffman’s Chocolates. Child Rescue Coalition received $500 as the Y100 runner-up and the remaining five non-prof- its received $250 as consolation prizes. The over-the-top “Walk in a Park” took judges for a stroll. The sundae featured three scoops of Hoffman’s Choco- lates Ice Cream flavors of Heav- enly Hash and Mint Chip and topped with Mint Meltaways, Gummy Bears to represent chil- dren playing in the park, Rice Krispie 'Fish" to represent the water, Graham Crumble to sig- nify the sand and a delicious Sugar Cone.
