Finally, I will open the church to house as many that need safe shelter during the storm. If not, I will ensure that adequate supplies were available for my entire family (water, non-perishable foods, gas for generator, propane tank full, etc.). On a work level, I would have my staff notifying all of our clients to make sure they were safe and had a plan in place. I, in turn, will be making sure my staff has the same. It seems like we have the wherewithal to plan for our safety, but unfortunately when you work with a vulnerable population like those we serve, you have to make allowances for them as well. Wilma was the closest we got to experiencing damage. Thank God it was only to the outside. We have a large bin with all the necessary supplies, in- cluding a portable burner, tarps, lanterns, flashlights, batteries, portable tv and radio, and lots of dried food and water. We have never had to leave, but if we do, we will notify at least two or three family members of where we are going. And most importantly, PRAY! I'm a "beat the rush" guy, so at five days out I will typically have gas in cans, water in the shed, propane in the grill and most of the basic food supplies. About four days out (if it really looks like it’s coming), I'll start putting up some of the shutters (and we have A LOT). I'll finish them two days out (and put away all outside furniture and debris). All five days I'll be praying that God turns the storm away from everyone! Our generator is checked, shutters closed and plenty of water and supplies. Outdoor furniture is taken in. Oh, and most of all we pray there is no devastation or deaths in the path as winds proceed.
