Alissa Parker, co-founder of Safe and Sound Schools and the mother of Emilie Parker, one of the 20 children who died tragically in the Sandy Hook School Shootings on December 14, 2012, was the keynote speaker during the 15th Annual National Confer- ence on the Wellbeing of Chil- dren and Families on October 23rd at the Palm Beach Con- vention Center. Palm Beach Atlantic University Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Don McCulloch also spoke at the conference that brings to- gether parents, volunteers and professionals concerned with the welfare of children and families for a full day of educational and networking opportunities. Presented by The Chil- dren’s Healing Institute, the Turn on the Light Conference featured variety of workshops and presentations focused on child and family health and wellbeing including strategies, research, practices, therapeu- tic approaches and advocacy. Dr. McCulloch’s Topic was “Parenting with the Finish Line in Mind.” About 70 mental health professionals attended his workshop which addressed different parenting styles and his own research on Empty Nest Syndrome. He also spoke about his website, www.emptynestexperience.org created as a place for parents to share their own empty nest experiences.
