OUT AND ABOUT 34 NOVEMBER 2018 Good News • South Florida Edition Eleven families in Habitat’s Homeownership program staked their claim to the first lots in Habitat Broward’s newest community, A Rick Case Habitat Community on World Habitat Day 2018 on Oc- tober 1st. Seventy-seven homes will ultimately be built in A Rick Case Habitat Commu- nity, making it the largest devel- opment in Habitat Broward’s history. It will also feature a community park. To celebrate the assign- ment of homes, homeowners were invited to place stakes on their newly formed house pads. Present to witness this accom- plishment were Nancy Robin (CEO), Marcia Barry-Smith (Di- rector of Com- munity Outreach and Program S e r v i c e s ) , Robert Taylor, Jr. (Board Chair) and other Board members. “I watched a future home- owner reach down and fill her hands with a fistful of earth from what will become her fam- ily’s homestead, and I was touched to my core. This is so much more than building a house. It is the reason we do what we do,” offered Marcia Barry-Smith, Habitat Broward Director of Community Out- reach and Program Services. More than 30 years ago, the United Nations General As- sembly took an important step to promote the idea that every- one deserves a decent place to live by declaring that the first Monday in October as World Habitat Day.
