After a presentation by Dr. Paayal Patel fromBrainMatters Research, Master of Cere- monies Mike Trim of WPTV led a panel discussion with guests USMC Veteran Jorge Morales (ret.), Steeplechase Jockey and TrainerArchibald (“Arch”) Kings- ley Jr., and Mark “Super” Duper of the Miami Dolphins (ret.). The presentation explained what the brain is, how it works, how concussion affects the brain, and what can be done to help the brain recover from a concussion. According to Sarah Crane, executive director, “There is growing concern about the risk of head injuries result from con- tact sports. Playing these sports (like football or ice hockey) can alter the structure and function of the brain because players constantly are exposed to sub- concussive head trauma. When these blows occur on a contin- ual basis, it can result in either concussions, traumatic brain in- juries, or in severe cases, chronic traumatic encephalopa- thy (CTE).” The HOW Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities by advocating for and providing access to hy- perbaric oxygen therapy. how- foundationsf.org .
